Is this the same person who asked a question about a different Old Navy skirt yesterday. If so, hello again! I love wearing my plaid skirts/shorts with turtlenecks, if you need to be warm throw a shrug sweater over that too. Pair it with cable knit tights, and riding boots or ballet flats.
- boyfriend: ooh baby baby baby ahhhh, baby baby baby ohhhhhhh
- me: uhhhh, hello?
- boyfriend: its justin beiber, duh
- boyfriend: jeez, its like you live under a rock
I’m a really good (and unashamed) sale shopper. True preppies are notoriously thrifty. I don’t tend to shop the cheapest of brands, but I hardly ever pay full price for anything.
Stores like J.Crew, Rugby, Ralph Lauren, and Lands’ End, while not the cheapest in the world, all have amazing sales where you can get stuff around 70 percent off. I tend to wait until they have the discount on top of the sale price, and then stock up on a few pieces. A couple of months ago Lands’ End had a sale on polos for about $6, so I bought 6 but made sure I threw all my old ones that were starting to show wear.
Knowing of a good thrift store is another good trick. I have a hard time going to Goodwill or Salvation Army, but a couple of the smaller ones in town are really well curated. A good thrift store will only accept brand names, good condition pieces, and in season pieces, so there’s much less junk to sift through. Those stores are usually more expensive than the big ones, but it’s well worth it as the shopping experience is 100x better and everything is usually still reasonable. It helps that I live in a pretty yuppie town, so so many of the women who consign their clothing are rich preppies who wear Lilly a few times and then get rid of it and move on to the next thing. Last time I got a Ralph Lauren Oxford for $7, a J.Crew Coat for $10, and a Molly B dress (tags on) for $30.
I also scan ebay, especially for brands that are harder to find elsewhere. Just a couple of weeks ago I got an embroidered Lilly Pulitzer skirt (in perfect condition) for about $12 shipped, yesterday I got a J.Crew critter skirt (supposedly ‘worn once’, but who knows) for $6.50 shipped.
Also, while there are definitely preppy brands where you’ll have an easier time finding things your style, don’t be shy if you find something cute from a place like Old Navy, Target, or Forever 21. If it looks cute and good quality who cares about the brand label. Just this year Old Navy had some of the cutest argyle sweaters out there. Last year Target had a lookalike Jack Rogers style shoe that was adorable.

I am a huge advocate of Rugby dresses. I’ve always found dresses to be really comfortable, and these ones are casual enough to be worn everyday. In the winter I love wearing them with tights or leggings and riding boots. They’re seriously as comfortable as wearing a giant sweatshirt. Here’s one that’s on sale now!

I’ve also been crazy about oxfords this season. They’re so flexible. You can wear them with jeans or cords for a casual look, or tuck it into a casual skirt for something a touch more dressy. You can pair it with a cable-knit sweater or wear them alone. I’ll again point you to the rugby store because they have some AMAZING prices right now. Though the sizes unfortunately are a bit picked over.

One last thing I’d invest in is a cute pair of wintery shorts in a tweed or velour type fabric. They’re great to pair over tights or leggings and you can wear them with your sweaters. It’s a great way to mix up your wardrobe from the standard jeans-cords routine, while keeping it pretty casual. Adding a couple of corduroy or velour skirts in bright colors will have a similar effect.
I’m going to assume you got it in the “simply marvelous” color, since you said that the bottom was purple. I’d wear it with a black or charcoal cardigan set (off-white could work too). Tuck the tank or tee into the skirt to get the color block look and then wear the cardigan over. Pair it with some wool tights or heavier nylon tights for winter and cute girly ballet flats and you’re good to go.

Awwww yeah.
Haha, we exist but can be hard to find due to the indoorsiness. That sounds like the PERFECT New Year’s Eve to me. My friend wants me to go with him to a party that we’re not genuinely invited to, where I won’t know anyone, but I’m trying to convince him to just be lame with me, get dressed up, stay in, get drunk, and eat Chinese food.

Staying in can be cool too ;) Let’s just hope my parents have bought A LOT of bubbly.
Backhanded question anon. Now I have to reevaluate my life. I spent 6 hours today raking seaweed from my yard. That counts as having a life…right?
Joking, I’ve actually long accepted the fact that I’m quasi-antisocial and only function in an academic environment.

Lately, almost. Normally, when I have school, extracurriculars, and friends around significantly, less.
I WISH LOVE! I think I should up and move to NC next year because so many of my favorite tumblr ladies are there. I feel like it would be a party all the time.

…until 2011 and I still do not have plans. There is a distinct possibility of a Tumblr New Year.
